Engine and Driving Performance

The engine is a 124cc, liquid-cooled, SOHC 4-valve single-cylinder with VVA (Variable Valve Assembly), also used on the XSR125 and YZF-R125. 52.0mm x 58.7mm bore stroke, 11.2:1 compression ratio, 15ps (11kW)/10000rpm maximum output, 1.1kg-m (11N-m)/6500 rpm maximum torque.

The VVA, which switches between low-speed and mid-to-high-speed intake cams from 7000 to 7400 rpm, delivers excellent power and torque characteristics throughout the entire range. It delivers acceleration and high-speed performance that can smoothly adapt to the flow of traffic on-road as well as off-road fun riding.

What is Yamaha's "VVA (Variable valve Actuation)"?

The synergistic effect of a secondary deceleration ratio with enhanced low-speed torque makes it easy to start even in situations where the rider repeatedly starts and stops, This is a safe cruising range not only for commuting to work or school, but also for touring.

A large-capacity air cleaner box is used to ensure the low-to-mid-speed torque required for off-road driving. The wet filter paper type air filter can be easily accessed by simply removing the side cover. The muffler is an upswept left-hand type suitable for off-road driving, and the exhaust pipe has a layout that does not interfere with off-road driving.

Suspension and Maneuverability

The frame is a steel tube semi-double cradle type with an optimized balance between longitudinal and torsional rigidity. It supports a sense of unity between rider and machine at medium to high speeds, both off-road and on-road.The front and rear suspensions are designed to allow riders to enjoy off-road riding without hesitation, and are flexible enough to cope with uneven road surfaces, yet firm enough to provide bottom-end traction. The 41 mm inner tube-diameter upright front forks are equipped with damping force generators and springs on each side, and oil lock pieces are used to balance damping characteristics and spring constant while alleviating the feeling of bottoming out. The stroke is 215mm. The rear is equipped with a link-type monocross suspension that delivers both a soft ride and excellent damping characteristics under heavy loads. The shock absorbers are gas-filled to stabilize performance during continuous driving. Wheel travel is 187mm. In addition, the rigidity adjustment of the wheel hubs and other details have been carefully optimized to achieve handling stability in a variety of situations. The minimum ground clearance is 265mm, equivalent to that of a full-scale off-road vehicle. The front brake is a combination of a 2-pod caliper and φ267mm disc, and the rear is a combination of a 1-pod caliper and φ220mm disc. The brake pad material and lever ratio are well balanced to provide high controllability in a variety of situations. The front brake is also equipped with ABS.

The seat height is 875 mm, with a flat seat that is easy to move back and forth, left and right, and the exterior cover is shaped with minimal unevenness for a smooth transition between standing and sitting positions, providing a high degree of freedom in the riding position. A wide footrest on both sides is also adopted for ease of control using the step.

Also available as factory-installed accessories are a lowered seat (19,800 yen) that lowers the seat surface by 30 mm and a lowered link (7,700 yen) that lowers the seat height by 40 mm.

Design and Advanced Features

Under the design concept of "Feel the YAMAHA offroad spirit!", a design similar to that of past Yamaha off-road vehicles was adopted, with a condensed chassis and light exterior. While keeping the modern horizontal proportions, the black parts under the seat are seen as the core, and the lines extending from the side covers to the radiator shroud and front fendersexpress thestrength of the vehicle as it moves forward(and do not interfere with maneuverability even in off-road boots).

The engine, painted black from the cylinder up, and the headlight cowl, which is compact with the headlamp and position lamp divided into two sections (top and bottom), also emphasize the sense of condensation. The headlamps are LED and highly visible despite their compact size.

The monochrome LCD multi-function meter has a compact layout that displays speed, engine RPM, odometer, trip, remaining fuel, instantaneous and average fuel consumption, clock, gear indicator, and VVA operation indicator. By connecting a smartphone with the dedicated "Y-Connect (Yamaha Motorcycle Connect)" application installed, the meter can display information such as incoming phone calls, incoming e-mails, and remaining battery level. A helmet holder is also provided on the left side of the vehicle.
