At the ongoing China Chongqing Motor Motorcycle Show, Honda has unveiled a new neo-classic concept model, the "CB250SS Concept." While details have not yet been announced, it appears to be a neo-classic model equipped with a liquid-cooled 250cc single-cylinder engine.

Fusing modern underpinnings with a retro exterior

The "CB250SS Concept" announced by Honda in Chongqing is, as you can see, a neo-classic concept model featuring a round headlight, a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, and a tuck-and-roll seat.

Although there has been no official announcement regarding the details, the engine is a liquid-cooled single-cylinder, and the displacement is expected to be 250cc as the name suggests. Based on its appearance, it seems to be the same DOHC 4-valve unit shared with models like the Rebel 250 and CRF250L.

The modern underpinnings, such as the inverted forks and rear link-type monoshock, follow the style of recent neo-classic models. The cradle frame surrounding the engine is different from that of the CRF250L, and it appears to be a dedicated component, distinct from the diamond-type frame of the Rebel 250 or the CBR250R (MC41) that was previously available in the Japanese market.

The design, with its independent tank, seat, and side covers, highlights its neo-classic character. The block-pattern tires also add an off-road flair.

The wide, flat seat features a brown color and tuck-and-roll stitching for a classical atmosphere. True to its single-cylinder nature, the fuel tank is slim.

The 4-lamp LED headlight, which appears to be shared with the Rebel 250, is dressed up with a guard and a small screen.

The tail section has a unique shape that combines a road-sport-like cowl with a close-fitting fender. The muffler exhaust is a dual-end type. Will options like spoke wheels be available?

A successor to the CB190SS? Hopes for a Japanese release

The biggest highlight is likely its appearance. While it has an overall modern neo-classic vibe, the under-guard, block-pattern tires, and the uniquely designed tail cowl and rear fender give it an off-road feel. It has the atmosphere of a casual and stylish street scrambler aimed at younger riders.

In terms of positioning, it is thought to be the successor to the CB190SS produced by Wuyang-Honda, but while the 190 is an air-cooled single-cylinder, this model suggests an upgrade. With a design that seems highly versatile for everything from city riding to touring, there are likely many fans in Japan thinking, "This is exactly what I want!" Reports indicate that it is scheduled to be released in China in the spring of 2027.

Coincidentally, Yamaha recently announced the "YZF-R2" equipped with a newly developed 204cc single-cylinder engine, and the arrival of sibling models using the same engine is also expected. Will the 200-250cc single-cylinder sports class see a surge in popularity in the future?

The CB190SS, currently sold locally as a "cafe racer." It is equipped with a 184cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine and features high-quality details such as stainless steel covers.
