TG-RUN's GSX1100S KATANA
Based on the Final Edition, each part was rebuilt, and the parts necessary to ride an air-cooled Katana in the modern era were changed. On top of that, this KATANA has been converted to 18-inch front and rear, and controls such as the seat and steps have been updated. The work was done by Technical Garage RUN, and it is designed as an answer to the question of what is necessary to ride '80s models in the future. Mr. Sugimoto from the store explains, "First of all, I would like to say that even if a brand-new machine from that time were reproduced here without aging, it would still be insufficient in today's environment. The GSX1100S Katana was the top model at the time, and it was designed for the environment of the time. Therefore, if you look at it now, you will find some parts that are lacking. Let's also throw out the idea that the Katana has the Final Edition. The basics are still the same as they were 40 years ago, and the model is already 20 years old. I really want you to grasp and understand that." The environment refers to the road conditions and the amount of traffic, and also the improvement in technology. We want to be aware of that. So, what is lacking?
"It's the safety and security. The first step is the brakes. The master cylinder, calipers, pads, and discs. We will replace these with modern, reliable parts to ensure braking power and control. Then, naturally, the lack of capability of the front and rear suspension will also be noticeable, so we will work on upgrading them. Ideally, the front forks should be replaced as well as the rear shocks, but depending on the model, user preference, and usage, internal tuning can be used to address this issue. This would also mean replacing the tires with modern, reliable ones that bring out the best in braking power and suspension performance. Even if your Katana comes with 19-inch front tires as stock, choose NEW-spec compliant ones to ensure a good grip. These critical safety parts will also be lacking, so make sure they are newer generation and reliable. If in perfect condition, the Katana has the power to cruise at 200 km/h with room to spare. But even if it is in perfect condition, it is difficult to cope with sudden accidents or unexpected problems with the stock parts. It is an old bike. I think it is the duty of the rider to understand that." It is important to control the speed and posture of the bike and to be able to stop properly. This should be considered first. This is true even with a new machine. So, if the machine is old, we should think about rebuilding the base of the bike to compensate for what's lacking, after bringing it to a state close to that of a new bike. "There are many people who recognize this and leave the frame, exterior, and wheels as stock, but clean it up, repaint it, and then make up for the things that are lacking as mentioned above. The same goes for engine overhauls and carburetors. Consumables, electrical systems, and other items that are likely to deteriorate in the future are replaced or refinished with new parts, and the machine is reset to start again from this point. The necessary parts are lubricated and oiled in appropriate amounts, bolts are replaced with new ones, and the correct tightening torque is managed using a torque wrench. Then, balancing is performed, and the bike is finished." The combination of overhaul and upgrade is the only way to enjoy an '80s bike. "If you reset it like this and rebuild it to fit the current environment, you can use that as a starting point. We've done some upgrades with this complete custom, and I think the owner will be able to enjoy it for a long time." In order to ride the classic Katana now, the base was rebuilt and converted to 18-inch front and rear, and further tweaks were made to reduce weight and enhance the quality feel. This machine is an example of TG-RUN's Version Up Complete and is an example of what Mr. Sugimoto has described so far.
