SUZUKI's V-Strom series is a historic lineup that has led the adventure touring category. Among them, the V-Strom 800 series represents a new generation, with the DE model featuring 21-inch wheels announced at EICMA (Milan Show) in 2022, followed by the addition of the standard model a year later.

The engine is a 775cc parallel-twin, shared with the GSX-8 series, offering a balance of torquey performance in the low to mid-range and smooth acceleration in the high-revving range. This provides the potential for a wide range of riding, from comfortable on-road touring to light off-road excursions.

While the V-Strom 800DE, with its 21-inch front wheel, pursues more serious off-road capabilities, the standard "V-Strom 800" model with 19-inch front wheel emphasizes on-road comfort and nimble handling.

Yojo chose the V-Strom 800 as a replacement for their previous V-Strom 250SX, seeking more comfort on highways. While considering other models such as the V-Strom 800DE, V-Strom 1050, Yamaha's 660 Tenere, and Kawasaki's Tracer, they ultimately decided on the V-Strom 800 for its "looks, performance, price, seat height, and uniqueness."

They are particularly pleased with the ability to express their individuality, as it's a relatively new model with limited production numbers. While describing it as having "sufficient performance as a tool for transportation," they also express satisfaction with the improved seat height compared to the 250SX and the abundance of the latest electronic rider aids. It truly showcases the appeal of a practical adventure bike that meets all the rider's needs.

■ Reason for Purchase, Usage, Comparison Models

Replaced my V-Strom 250SX. I wanted more comfort on highways, so I upgraded. I was considering the V-Strom 800DE, V-Strom 1050, 660 Tenere, Tracer, etc. I'm not a fan of the recent Honda and Kawasaki designs, so they were out of consideration. With a preference for Suzuki, I chose the V-Strom 800 based on its looks, performance, price, seat height, and uniqueness.

■ Strengths

Nothing particularly outstanding, but generally good across the board.
Sufficient performance as a tool for transportation.
Despite being a relatively new model, it has low production numbers, so you won't see many others like it.

Mainly used for day trips, with occasional overnight or camping trips.
Power and acceleration are more than adequate.

Better seat height than the 250SX (825mm). I was surprised when I first rode it.
Even at 160cm tall, I can comfortably place the balls of both feet on the ground. If you're concerned, you can opt for a low seat or use a linkage to lower the ride height.
My unit was purchased used with a t-rex racing multi-level lowering kit already installed. This appears to allow for four ride height settings: stock/1/2/3 inches. It also looks stronger and better than the stock linkage, so I'm keeping it as is.

Being a new design, it has abundant electronic features.
ABS, ride-by-wire throttle, power mode settings, quick shifter, traction control... I don't use all of them, but it's good to have them.

Fuel economy is around 20km/L, and with a 20L tank, I believe it can travel 400km. (Requires premium gasoline)

■ Weaknesses

Due to low production numbers, the availability of units is limited.
The bike weighs 220kg, so you can feel its weight slightly while riding.

■ Advice for Potential Buyers

If you're debating between the 800 and 800DE, it's best to compare them side-by-side, as there are subtle differences. (Though they are rarely available in dealerships...)
Generally, the 800DE has more luxurious equipment.
I chose the standard 800 because I prioritize on-road touring and had concerns about seat height.
