Aiming for the Optimal Balance Between "Accessibility" and "Detail"
Takashi Furuya, who was in charge of the design for Tamiya's "1/12 Honda CB1000F," set a goal of creating a "plastic model that isn't intimidating." By eliminating the need for glue and using different colored plastic parts, the model is designed to look good even without painting.
However, it would be premature to dismiss this as just a beginner's model. Furuya explains, "Precisely because it's a naked model with an exposed engine, I wanted to reproduce the details thoroughly." He poured numerous meticulous efforts into achieving the best balance between ease of assembly and intricate detail. Let's explore its features.
This article is an excerpt from the "Honda CB1000F Talk Event" held on February 14th at TAMIYA PLAMODEL FACTORY TOKYO in Shimbashi, Tokyo. Behind-the-scenes stories about both the actual CB1000F and its plastic model were shared with the first 20 attendees.

Tamiya's "1/12 Honda CB1000F" is meticulously reproduced in 1/12 scale. The photo shows it assembled without painting, yet it possesses considerable realism.
Viewed from a slight distance, the reproduction is so accurate it could be mistaken for the real thing, a testament to "The World of Tamiya." Pay attention to the clearance between the rear wheel and the ground when the center stand is deployed, as discussed later.
Precision Reproduction of Radiator Hoses: A Highlight of Water-Cooled Engines
In water-cooled engines, which lack the cooling fins of air-cooled ones, the complex routing of radiator hoses becomes a visual focal point. This model recreates the texture of the actual hoses, which have mesh woven into rubber, through delicate patterns achieved via mold processing. This intricate detail is applied not only to the thick coolant pipes but also to the thinner pipes connected to the oil cooler, resulting in an impressive level of precision. As Furuya stated, "Water-cooled engines have their own highlights," and the hoses coiling around the engine are masterfully reproduced.
Furuya identified the radiator hoses as a "highlight of water-cooled engines." The realistically reproduced mesh weave is truly remarkable.
A Crucial Part of the Real Bike, Thus Requiring Thorough Reproduction
The airbox duct, barely visible through the frame gaps, is a critical component that influenced drivability even in the development of the actual bike. Typically, cylindrical parts like this are reproduced using two separate pieces in plastic models. However, Tamiya's unique mold technology allows for a single-piece molding, simplifying assembly. Although this area is mostly hidden after assembly, the design philosophy of "not omitting structurally important parts" extends to these less visible areas.
The air cleaner duct, normally a two-piece cylindrical part, is molded as a single piece here to simplify assembly.
However, it's mostly hidden by the frame after assembly... Yet, Tamiya's spirit insists on realistic reproduction!
Seat with Molded Leather Texture
The seat, a defining feature of a naked bike, beautifully replicates the quilting reminiscent of the original CB750F. Furthermore, the grain of the leather and the stitching are expressed through mold processing. While it possesses sufficient texture even in its molded color, painting it further enhances its refined appearance. This product, which meticulously considers even the tactile feel of the surface, is one of its highlights, and Furuya himself declares it a "masterpiece."
The quilting on the seat and the leather texture are perfectly reproduced. The level of detail with unpainted plastic is astonishing.
One-Piece Design Reduces Effort and Improves Finish
In traditional motorcycle models, fuel tanks were often made from two separate halves that needed to be glued together, requiring the seam to be filled and sanded, especially during painting. The Tamiya CB1000F features a one-piece design for both the tank and the intricately shaped front fender. This eliminates the need for seam treatment while perfectly replicating the bike's flowing lines. This aspect truly symbolizes the product's aim to lower the barrier to entry while maintaining high quality.

Chrome-Plated Muffler Avoids Gluing Risks
The muffler parts are a beautiful two-piece chrome-plated structure. However, chrome-plated parts do not adhere well to glue, and attempting to glue them requires removing the plating, which carries the risk of accidentally stripping the plating from the surface. To address this, the Tamiya CB1000F muffler parts are designed to be screwed together at the center. The screw heads are completely hidden by a cover attached later, ensuring the exterior appearance is not compromised.
The muffler, made of stainless steel in the actual bike, is chrome-plated to replicate its metallic feel.
Designed for screw assembly instead of glue, the screws are located under a cover just before the silencer.
The muffler even reproduces the weld marks at the exhaust pipe junction. The frame is similarly detailed.
Headlight Parts Precision: Down to 1/100mm!
The LED headlight, featuring dual upper and lower bulbs for high and low beams, is fully reproduced with independent internal components and rings. Furthermore, all five constituent parts snap together or are press-fit, eliminating the need for glue and the risk of smudging the clear parts. To achieve this structure, the fitting precision has been adjusted to within 1/100mm.
Additionally, the taillight employs a double-layer structure, combining a clear red lens with an inner transparent part, creating a realistic impression of illumination solely through the reflector's shine (though it does not actually light up). The LCD meter also features a double-layer structure, with a transparent part placed over the decal to replicate the sheen characteristic of LCD panels.
This part, reproduced with 5 components, requires no glue for assembly, demanding extremely high precision.

Easy Painting: Front Disc Brake as Separate Parts
Brake discs are typically molded as a single piece comprising the inner and outer parts. However, the Tamiya CB1000F separates these into distinct components. This eliminates the difficult task of masking a circular area for painting the inner part, and even without painting, the difference in plastic colors creates a mechanical texture. The rear disc is molded as one piece, but it comes with pre-cut mask stickers to easily paint the inner part black.
The front brake disc is easy to paint as the inner and outer parts are separate. Furthermore, the different plastic colors create a clear contrast even without painting.

Inner Tubes: Separate Plated Parts for Metallic Realism
The inner tubes of the front forks are made of plated parts, providing a shine that is difficult to achieve through painting. There's no need to apply expensive metal stickers; simply assembling the parts gives you a metallic finish similar to the actual bike. A notable feature is the use of "under-gate" molding, where the gate marks are hidden on the back of the part, not on the surface.

Chain Precision Challenging the 0.2mm Limit
The drive chain represents a challenge to the limits of 1/12 scale molding, with the thinnest part of the plate measuring a mere 0.2mm. It features a split structure for the left and right sides, which are then joined together, allowing for precise reproduction of the link details even when viewed from the wheel side. While such intricate chain reproduction was previously only possible in 1/6 scale, it has only recently become feasible in 1/12 scale.
Is this level of detail necessary?! The drive chain is incredibly realistic, with plates and pins reproduced with extreme accuracy. Although parts like the front sprocket will be completely hidden after assembly...
Center Stand Deploys, Rear Tire Lowers Like the Real Bike!?
The center stand, an optional part on the actual bike, is also included. However, in plastic models, the rear suspension doesn't extend when the stand is deployed, creating an unnatural gap between the tire and the ground – a common "model-specific oddity." To counter this, the Tamiya CB1000F features a suspension link with intentional play, allowing the tire to lower slightly when the center stand is deployed. This achieves a clearance closer to the real bike's appearance. How meticulously detailed! (laughs)
Bikini Cowl Can Be Attached/Detached After Assembly
Parts for the SE version, equipped with a bikini cowl, are also included. The cowl can be attached and detached without glue, allowing you to change the style after assembly to suit your mood. Furthermore, dedicated SE features like the quick shifter, the seat with silver stitching, and even the tiny tag are reproduced with decals.
The decals include three colors for the STD version, as well as cowl stripes for the STD black model when the bikini cowl is attached. You can even reproduce the look with genuine accessories.
Tiny Nuts: No Worries About Losing Them?!
The cylinder stud nuts on the left side of the engine, typically molded integrally with the engine parts, are reproduced as separate, independent parts to achieve a realistic, perfectly round nut shape. While easy to paint, their silver plastic color provides a nice accent against the black engine even when unpainted.
The separately molded cylinder stud nuts (circled in red) are extremely small parts. To prevent loss, one spare is included.
Deformation for a Closer Resemblance to the Real Bike's Image
As demonstrated, Tamiya's 1/12 Honda CB1000F incorporates a remarkable level of detail. It's a well-known fact that scaling down a real vehicle's dimensions directly can alter its perceived proportions, necessitating some deformation. Furuya shared his insights on this aspect.
Furuya, the developer of the Tamiya CB1000F, has been a rider for nearly 30 years, owning a 1991 NSR250R. It's surely gratifying for fellow riders to know that a motorcycle enthusiast is behind the creation of this model.
Generally, the larger the scale reduction, the less pronounced the contours become, making deformation necessary to emphasize "key features." Additionally, the difference in viewing angles between the real vehicle and the model plays a role. For instance, while we rarely see a real car from directly above, models are almost always viewed from this perspective. In such cases, if the proportions were identical to the real car, the cabin might appear too small, or the fender contours might seem insufficient, thus requiring deformation. However, modern cars often have pronounced design elements that look fine when scaled down directly. In older cars, such adjustments were essential.
Motorcycles, on the other hand, have a smaller scale reduction ratio compared to cars, so extreme deformation is not typically applied. However, the tires might be designed slightly wider for a more imposing look, and round pipes like the exhaust headers, which can appear thin when scaled down proportionally, are thickened by fractions of a millimeter to approach the "real bike image" that strikes the eye.
Interestingly, Tamiya's rise to global fame as a plastic model manufacturer began with the 1967 release of the Honda F1 RA273. Their first motorcycle plastic model was also a Honda (the 1/6 scale Dream CB750 Four, released in 1970). Furthermore, the 1/6 and 1/12 scale CB750F models have been continuously sold since their release in 1981, making them enduring bestsellers for over 40 years. The world's leading plastic model manufacturer and the world's leading motorcycle manufacturer share a deep and enduring connection.
Comparing the "Reiwa era F" with the "Showa era F" side-by-side as plastic models would be quite enjoyable, wouldn't it?
