[On-Site Report] Suzuka 8 Hours Ends Abruptly Due to Rain, Honda HRC Secures Fifth Consecutive Victory in Unprecedented Race

The 47th Coca-Cola Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race, the third round of the 2026 FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC), held on July 5th, saw Honda HRC take victory, marking their fifth consecutive win at Suzuka. YAMAHA FACTORY RACING TEAM finished second, followed by BMW MOTORRAD WORLD ENDURANCE TEAM in third.

Conditions That Influenced the 2026 Suzuka 8 Hours

This year's Suzuka 8 Hours was held in early July, about a month earlier than usual. The date change was made to avoid the peak of the summer heat, and with no clashes with MotoGP or WorldSBK schedules, it became a special event that brought together riders competing in the world's top categories.

During the Suzuka 8 Hours test in May, teams highly praised the improved grip performance due to resurfacing work on the West Course the previous year and the East Course this year. Additionally, test sessions were scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, providing an extra day compared to previous years for teams to fine-tune their machines.

However, the situation changed dramatically when the race week began. Crashes occurred from the first day of testing, and some riders were forced to withdraw due to injuries. Some teams had to hastily bring in replacement riders, facing unexpected challenges.

Furthermore, the race week was significantly affected by the weather, as it coincided with the rainy season. The weekly forecast predicted many rainy days, with some sessions under cloudy skies. The Top 10 Trial and the main race also took place in wet conditions. In addition to the changing track conditions due to rain, issues such as tire debris and bumps in certain sections were reported, leading to unpredictable machine behavior even when following the same racing line.

The ability to read and adapt to the constantly changing track surface, despite the new pavement offering high grip, became a crucial factor in determining the outcome of this year's Suzuka 8 Hours.

Qualifying Format Change and Time Attacks Hampered by Rain

The qualifying sessions were held on Friday, with the first and second qualifying sessions scheduled. The top 10 teams from the combined results were set to advance to the Top 10 Trial on Saturday.

Traditionally, the Suzuka 8 Hours determines the top starting grid positions through the Top 10 Trial among the top 10 teams. However, weather played a significant role this year. Anticipating rain on Saturday, a policy was announced after the second qualifying session stating that the Top 10 Trial would not be held if rain was expected.

In EWC, series points are awarded for qualifying results, with points added for the top five teams. Therefore, a change in the qualifying format was a crucial alteration, impacting not only the starting grid but also the championship standings. The announcement of this policy after the second qualifying session elicited various reactions from teams and stakeholders.

The morning of Saturday was cloudy with occasional light rain. Although the Top 10 Trial was planned to proceed until just before its start, it was canceled a few minutes before commencement. Ultimately, the starting grid was determined by the combined results of the first two qualifying sessions.

As a result, Honda HRC secured pole position in the Formula EWC class. The reigning champions, aiming for their fourth consecutive win, secured the front row for the final thanks to consistent average lap times from Takumi Takahashi and Jonathan Rea. BMW MOTORRAD WORLD ENDURANCE TEAM took second place, followed by Elf Marc VDS Racing Team/KM99, with strong teams occupying the top grid positions.

Meanwhile, in the Superstock (SST) class, Team Étoile secured class pole position, qualifying 15th overall, marking their second consecutive class pole at the Suzuka 8 Hours.

8-Hour Battle Hampered by Rain; Honda HRC Takes the Lead from the Start

The Suzuka Circuit on race day was under a forecast of rain. At the 11:30 AM start time, the sky was cloudy, and although there was no heavy downpour, the track was completely wet. Teams embarked on the 8-hour race under challenging conditions.

Yoshimura SERT Motul grabbed the holeshot. However, AutoRace Ube Racing Team and Honda HRC then engaged in a fierce battle for the lead. AutoRace Ube Racing Team, in their first full season, showed speed comparable to full-time EWC teams and works teams, leading the early stages of the race. Honda HRC also maintained a stable pace, competing for the top position.

YART Yamaha Official EWC Team and BMW MOTORRAD WORLD ENDURANCE TEAM also made their presence felt, creating a multi-manufacturer battle from the beginning. From lap 28 onwards, Honda HRC took the lead and gradually asserted control of the race by maintaining a consistent pace.

Meanwhile, the race was also a battle against changing conditions. Early on, TEAM FRONTIER experienced white smoke, followed by Tati Team AVA6 Racing also emitting white smoke at 130R, leaving oil on the track. As rain began to fall, track conditions became even more unstable, leading to numerous crashes.

Astemo Pro Honda SI Racing, which was leading among the All Japan Road Race Championship teams, also crashed after hitting oil, losing significant positions. The grip levels varied constantly due to changes in rainfall, and even within the same wet conditions, the track surface differed significantly depending on the time of day. Due to these circumstances, the safety car was deployed twice in the early stages.

Around the halfway point of the race, F.C.C. TSR Honda France stopped on the West Straight due to running out of fuel. Subsequently, YAMAHA FACTORY RACING TEAM overtook AutoRace Ube Racing Team to move into second place.

In the final hour, the rain temporarily eased, and position changes were expected due to the shifting track conditions. However, as the final hour approached, the rain intensified again, leading to multiple crashes and another safety car deployment. The closing stages of the race saw a safety car period lasting over 30 minutes, after which a red flag was shown, ending the race. The final standings remained unchanged, concluding a turbulent 8-hour endurance race.

Honda HRC Achieves 5th Consecutive Win; NCXX RACING with RIDERS CLUB Wins SST Class

Honda HRC, completing 188 laps, emerged victorious in the turbulent 8-hour race. After taking the lead on lap 28, they maintained a stable pace despite the constantly changing track conditions. They crossed the finish line without relinquishing the top spot, securing their fifth consecutive Suzuka 8 Hours victory.

YAMAHA FACTORY RACING TEAM finished second. After narrowly losing to Honda HRC by 34.243 seconds in 2025, they aimed for victory at Suzuka this year. Although they completed the same number of laps as Honda HRC in the final race, they were unable to make a comeback in the challenging conditions.

BMW MOTORRAD WORLD ENDURANCE TEAM secured third place. Following strong performances at Le Mans and Spa, BMW demonstrated consistent competitiveness throughout the season, earning a podium finish at Suzuka. Notably, YART Yamaha Official EWC Team and AutoRace Ube Racing Team finished fourth and fifth, respectively, also completing 188 laps like the victorious Honda HRC.

In the SST class, Dafy-Kaedear-RAC41-Honda, NCXX RACING with RIDERS CLUB, Team Étoile, and Wójcik Racing Team #77 SST battled for the lead.

As anticipated, NCXX RACING with RIDERS CLUB, featuring Teppei Nagashima, showed strong performance alongside the EWC participants. The lead frequently changed hands in a closely contested battle.

Team Étoile lost significant ground after a pit stop due to being held at the pit lane exit for approximately two minutes. Although they fought back to second place, NCXX RACING with RIDERS CLUB ultimately claimed the class victory.

Team Étoile was held at the pit lane exit for about two minutes after a pit stop, causing them to lose significant positions. Although they managed to climb back to second place, NCXX RACING with RIDERS CLUB ultimately secured the class victory.

2026 Suzuka 8 Hours Concludes, Championship Battle Heads to the Final Round

With these results, YART Yamaha Official EWC Team maintains the lead in the 2026 EWC standings with 112 points. BMW MOTORRAD WORLD ENDURANCE TEAM is second with 93 points, followed by Yoshimura SERT Motul in third with 84 points.

In the SST class, Champion-Hert Powered by MRP leads with 84 points. Wójcik Racing Team #77 SST is second with 65 points, and Dafy-Kaedear-RAC41-Honda is third with 64 points.

The final round will be the Bol d'Or 24-hour Endurance Road Race held in France. With a maximum of 65 points available for a win, including bonus points for qualifying and leading during the race, the championship battle in both classes will go down to the wire.

Last year, BMW MOTORRAD WORLD ENDURANCE TEAM was on the verge of winning the title but suffered a breakdown with 30 minutes remaining in the Bol d'Or 24-hour Endurance Road Race, resulting in a dramatic loss of their first series title. In endurance racing, anything can happen until the very end.

Meanwhile, the 2026 Suzuka 8 Hours was held about a month earlier than usual and coincided with the rainy season, raising concerns about the impact of rain and spectator conditions. However, significant rain was primarily experienced during the Top 10 Trial and on race day. If the weather had been slightly different, the overall impression of the event might have changed.

In the 2025 event, some riders experienced heatstroke due to the intense heat. With temperatures nearing 30 degrees Celsius on days before and after the event, the risk of heatstroke associated with extreme heat, as seen last year, was mitigated. Considering the safety of spectators, team staff, and riders, holding the event during this period held significant merit.

While Honda HRC achieved their fifth consecutive Suzuka 8 Hours victory, rivals like YAMAHA FACTORY RACING TEAM also showcased their strength in the 2026 event. With only the Bol d'Or 24-hour Endurance Road Race remaining, the 2026 EWC season title will be decided in the final 24 hours.
