Recommended Touring Spots in 7 Prefectures in Kyushu

Hello, I am Tetsuma Photographer, a photographer who loves traveling in Kyushu! Using the know-how I have gained through my coverage activities for touring magazines that I started in 2017, I will be introducing selected recommended touring spots in the Kyushu area from the perspective of Tetsuma Photographer. The 28th installment is the Sasebo area, which has a rich historical background with a spectacular view of Kujuku Islands and warships.

1. The origin of Sasebo as a naval town: "The Triumphal Return Commemoration of the Former Sasebo Naval Base

The Former Navy Sasebo Chinmoku Triumphal Return Memorial is a historical building in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, completed in 1915 as a memorial museum related to the former Sasebo Chinmoku of the Imperial Japanese Navy. It is now open to the public as the "Sasebo City Museum Shimanose Art Center" and serves as a cultural center for the community.

The building features a red brick exterior based on the Neo-Renaissance style, with an impressive circular dome and arched windows in the front. The interior is in the form of an auditorium, with a large space with a high ceiling, and is highly regarded as an architectural symbol of the development of the military port city of Sasebo. The brick wall on the site bears the scars of machine gun fire at the end of the war, and one can feel the horror of those days.

2. The "edge" is the hottest "Kanzakibana, the westernmost point of the Japanese mainland

Kanzakibana, the westernmost point of Japan's mainland, is located at the end of the seaside road in Sasebo, northwestern Kyushu. Standing in the well-maintained observation area, the East China Sea fills the entire field of view. The unobstructed horizon makes you realize that this is the "edge.

It's a simple but significant "proof of achievement," and it has become a classic photo spot for travelers, riders, and fans of edge-conquering.

3. Overlooking Sasebo Port! Yumiharidake Observation Deck, where the remains of a gun battery still remain

Yumiharidake Observation Deck, located near the summit of Yumiharidake in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is a popular sightseeing spot that offers a panoramic view of Sasebo Port, the city center, and the Kujukushima archipelago. It is known for its particularly beautiful night views and has been selected as a "Japan Night View Heritage Site.

It is also characterized by the scenery typical of the port city of Sasebo. You can also see ships and harbor scenery, allowing you to feel both historical and modern at the same time.

The park overlooking Sasebo Bay also contains the ruins of a gun battery, known as an important remnant of the military port defense system of the Meiji period.

4. Tenkaiho, a spectacular spot with a panoramic view of the Kujuku Islands

Tenkaiho is a popular tourist spot that offers a 180-degree panoramic view of the Kujuku Islands in Saikai National Park, and has become a regular spot for Kyushu touring.

The scenery of small islands and complex coves scattered in the sea is a representative viewpoint of the sea area, which has been recognized by the "World's Most Beautiful Bays Club."

In the flower garden below the observatory, about 150,000 rape blossoms are in full bloom from late March to early April, and the same number of cosmos in early to mid-October.

5. Miraculous glasses created by nature! Megane-iwa (glasses rock)

This is a natural rock formation named after the two holes in the center that look like "glasses". It is relatively close to downtown Sasebo and is a tourist attraction known for its unique geographical beauty and views.

It was formed when the sandstone of the Tertiary age layer was eroded over a long period of time by wind and rain, creating two large holes in the center. It is a natural rock formation caused by the erosion of the sandstone layer and is about 10 meters high.
