Kaedea, which has a lineup of many two-wheeled products full of ideas, has announced another interesting product. This product was unveiled at the East-West Motorcycle Show in March, and is scheduled to go on sale before summer.

Rapid wireless charging while keeping your smartphone cool!

This is probably the world's first smartphone holder for two wheels. It is an idea product from Kaedea, which incorporates a Peltier element that cools one side (the other side heats up) when an electric current is applied, thereby preventing the smartphone from running out of heat.This product was just unveiled at the Kaedea booth at the Osaka/Tokyo Motorcycle Show, and at this point the product name and price are still undecided. We were able to borrow a sample of the product in its final stage for this special report (specifications may be subject to change when the product goes on the market).The Peltier element is the most distinctive feature of the product, and a cooling surface is placed where it comes in contact with the smartphone, forcibly cooling a smartphone that has become hot.For example, food delivery service users who usetheir phones heavily even in mid-summer for navigation apps and the like,this is the product they have been waiting for. The Peltier element (the part with the snowflake symbol) is embedded in the high quality aluminum body. The power supply to cool the element is taken from the 12V of the car body.

This Qi2 uses magnets to adsorb and precisely position the smartphone to achieve high-speed charging of up to 15W. There is a story behind this. When the prototype was initially made with a resin body, the heat generated by the Peltier element could not be fully dissipated even when the cooling fan was running, and the element was damaged by its own heat. The company then changed the material of the chassis to aluminum, which can be used as a heat sink, and designed it to efficiently dissipate heat in combination with the fan. The development process was a matter of necessity, but the high quality of the aluminum material is a good reason to purchase this product from the user's point of view.

Wireless charging uses the Qi2 high-speed charging standard. When a compatible smartphone is placed close to the device, it is pleasantly adsorbed.

The aluminum housing is loaded with features, including a Peltier element and its cooling fan, Qi2-standard wireless charging, and a vibration-absorbing system with four-point rubber mounts. The stays on the back are also made of aluminum.

Sturdy and secure

I actually used the product for a short time. When a smartphone compatible with wireless charging is set in the holder and charging starts, the Peltier element is simultaneously energized to start cooling. In other words, charging and cooling always proceed simultaneously. Although we were not able to use the smartphone so hard in April that it ran out of heat, the faint sound of the cooling fan rotating and the cool feeling of the Peltier element surface after the smartphone is removed should satisfy users who like such retrofitted electronic devices. While such gimmicky features are enjoyable, we were also impressed by the basic performance of the smartphone holder in this test. The holder's attention to detail is evident in its ability to hold the phone firmly in place, the wide range of mount position adjustment, and the anti-scratch rubber on the inside of the claw that holds the phone in place, making it very stress-free to use.

The claw that holds the phone from both sides can expand to 105mm in actual measurement. It can accommodate a wide range of smartphones.

The distance between the left and right claws is adjusted with a dial on the left side of the body.

After adjusting the width, lock the phone with the lever on the right side of the body.

The lower claw is also adjustable in length (i.e., the vertical position of the phone) and is secured with a lever on the back side of the body.

A USB-C port on the bottom of the body allows charging of electronic devices.

The device is also equipped with a mechanism to absorb vibrations, and the heavy aluminum body is mounted floating with rubber in four locations (the holder assembly weighs 399g at actual measurement). This rubber also has high elasticity, so the phone does not shake sloppily while driving. The bolt that holds the rubber in place is also made of stainless steel with a flat-head hexagonal hole, which shows that the company has not neglected quality in every detail.

The chassis is rubber-mounted with four rubber points plus an X-shaped stay. This mechanical design is sure to strike a chord with gimmick lovers.

A fan for cooling the Peltier element peeks through a slit in the back of the body. Of course, it is waterproof and can be used in the rain.

The power button is located on the back of the unit and glows blue when turned on. Note the texture around the round vibration-absorbing rubber above it.

Pricing is currently undecided, but the base model of the KDR-M33 series, the wireless charging model of this model, is priced at 7,480 yen. (Still, it is reasonable considering the functionality).
