Triumph Motorcycles Japan has announced that two-time Dakar Rally champion Sam Sunderland has begun his attempt to set the fastest motorcycle circumnavigation record on a Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer. He aims to break the record of 19 days, 8 hours, and 25 minutes, which has remained unbeaten for over 20 years.

A challenge to cover 5 continents and approximately 29,000km in under 19 days

Triumph Motorcycles Japan announced that two-time Dakar Rally champion and Red Bull athlete Sam Sunderland has begun his attempt to set the fastest motorcycle circumnavigation record. The vehicle being used is the Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer.

This project aims to break the official record of 19 days, 8 hours, and 25 minutes, which has stood for over 20 years, by traveling across 5 continents and covering approximately 18,000 miles (about 29,000km). The plan involves covering about 1,000 miles (about 1,600km) per day, with some days requiring over 17 hours of riding.

The route starts in London and passes through Istanbul, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Perth, Sydney, New Zealand, Vancouver, Montreal, and Casablanca before returning to London. The journey will also include traversing the Bonneville Salt Flats and the harsh Australian Outback.

To have the record certified, strict conditions must be met, such as using the same vehicle, traveling in one direction, and passing through two antipodal points (points on opposite sides of the Earth). Numerous challenges await, including climate changes, unknown road conditions, time zone differences, fatigue, and border crossings. Sunderland stated, "Riding for nearly 17 hours a day for many days is the toughest part, but it is precisely because it tests physical strength and concentration that it holds such great value."

Nick Bloor, CMO of Triumph Motorcycles, explains that the Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer is the ideal motorcycle, equipped with the comfort, reliability, and off-road capability required for this challenge. All eyes are on the outcome of this grueling journey as he attempts to break an unprecedented record.
